# International Discounts

![Screenshot of the "International" option](https://storage.crisp.chat/users/helpdesk/website/-/d/1/3/e/d13e90de659a8800/image_1w65g90.png)

International discounts let you show a different discount title to customers depending on the language of their checkout. For example, French-speaking customers can see "10 % de réduction" while everyone else sees "10% off."

Due to the [Shopify Functions Input Query Complexity Limitation](/en/article/shopify-functions-input-query-complexity-limitation-6u1u2t/), translated discount titles had to be put in their own separate discount type, rather than being available in other discount types. Also, due to this limitation, some features that are available in other discount types are not available in International discounts (though you can submit a feature request).

## Use cases
* Showing discount titles in your customers' language on stores that sell in multiple languages
* Meeting local requirements to show discount information in the customer's language

## How to create international discounts

To create a new international discount:

1. On the home screen of the app, click "Create discount."
2. Click "Start from scratch," then scroll down to "Advanced discount types."
3. Click "International."

## Translating a discount title

![Screenshot of the "Translations" table under the discount title](https://storage.crisp.chat/users/helpdesk/website/-/d/1/3/e/d13e90de659a8800/image_1623buv.png)

Every "Apply discount" step in your logic has a **Discount title**. This is the default title: customers see it unless you add a translation for their language.

To add a translation:

1. Under the discount title, find the **Translations** table and click "Add translation."
2. Choose a **Language**. The list shows the languages you've added to your store under **Settings > Languages**.
3. Enter the **Title** customers in that language should see.

To remove a translation, click the trash icon next to it. A translation with an empty title is ignored, and customers in that language see the default title.

If your logic has more than one "Apply discount" step (for example, different discounts for different products), translate each one separately.

Translations are only available for **automatic** discounts. See "Limitations" below.

### Volume discount tiers

Volume discount tiers can have their own titles too. To translate one, edit the tier, open its advanced options, and add translations under its **Title** the same way.

## Which title does the customer see?

* If the customer's language matches a language you translated, they see that translation. This applies at checkout and in the Discounted Price and Volume Pricing Table blocks on your product pages.
* Otherwise, they see the default discount title.

Languages must match exactly. For example, a translation for "Portuguese (Brazil)" is only shown to customers whose checkout is in Brazilian Portuguese, not to customers whose checkout is in Portuguese (Portugal).

## Testing

On the Test page, choose a language in the **Customer language** field to see which discount title customers in that language will see.

## Limitations

* **Translated titles work with automatic discounts only.** Automatic International discounts show the translated title at checkout. With a discount code, Shopify shows the code the customer entered (for example, "SUMMER10") instead of the discount's title, so a translation would never be seen. You can still create an International discount as a discount code; the Translations table just isn't shown.
* **Auto add to cart discounts can't have translated titles.** Due to the [Shopify Functions Input Query Complexity Limitation](/en/article/shopify-functions-input-query-complexity-limitation-6u1u2t/), auto add to cart discounts have no room left to check the customer's language, so the title of the added item's discount is always shown as written.
* Your store must have more than one language. You can add languages in your Shopify admin under **Settings > Languages**.

## FAQ

### Can I base the discount itself on the customer's language?

Not at the moment. International discounts change the discount **title** by language. To change the discount **amount** by location, use a country or market condition. See [Applying Discounts Based on Customer Location](/en/article/applying-discounts-based-on-customer-location-19p9e43/). If you'd like discounts based on the customer's language, please [submit a feature request](https://regios-technologies-inc.canny.io/feature-requests) or reach out to our support team.
