# Cart Promo Message

The "Promo Message" app block shows shoppers how close they are to their next reward, right above the items on your cart page. For example:

- "Add 2 more for 20% off"
- "10% off applied. Add $23.00 more for 15% off"
- "You unlocked 20% off"

The message is built from the discounts you created in our app, so there's nothing to type in for each discount. It updates as soon as the shopper changes their cart.

## Use Cases
- Showing a progress bar toward the next volume or tiered discount on the cart page
- Telling shoppers how much more to spend to unlock a discount
- Telling shoppers how many more items they need for a quantity break

## Which discounts it shows

The message works with automatic product discounts where the missing piece is the cart's item count or subtotal:

- Volume/tiered/quantity breaks discounts, based on quantity or on price.
- Product discounts with a minimum purchase requirement (a minimum subtotal or a minimum number of items).

If several discounts apply, the message shows the reward the shopper is closest to.

The message only promises a reward the shopper will actually get. If something else would still stop the discount from applying (for example a customer tag, or a product that isn't in the cart), the message stays hidden instead of showing a wrong promise. It also stays hidden when none of your discounts fit the list above. Order discounts, shipping discounts and free gifts don't show a message yet.

## Checklist

1. Create at least 1 automatic product discount with volume tiers or a minimum purchase requirement.
2. Make sure the Discounts Embed is turned on in your theme. Follow the [Discounts on Product Pages](/en/article/how-to-display-discounts-on-product-pages-1sj49lh/) tutorial if you haven't set it up yet.
3. Add the "Promo Message" block to your cart page. If you use [Automatic DOPP Setup](/en/article/automatic-dopp-setup-1m20tqm/), the theme ZIP adds it for you. To add it by hand:
   1. In the Theme Editor, open the Cart page template.
   2. Click "Add section", open the "Apps" tab, and choose "Promo Message".
   3. Save.
4. Preview your cart with 1 eligible item in it, then change the quantity to see the message update.

It doesn't matter exactly where you put the block on the cart page. On your storefront, the message always moves to just above the cart items.

## Customization options

You can change the following in the block's settings in the Theme Editor:

- **Style:** a progress bar with a marker for each reward, or text only.
- **Show before the shopper qualifies:** turn this off to only show the message once a reward applies.
- **Show when every reward is unlocked:** turn this off to hide the message once the shopper has the best reward.
- **Progress bar color:** leave it blank to use your theme's text color.
- **Corner radius:** from 0 to 12px.
- **Wording:** each message has its own text setting (Item count goal, Spend goal, Reward already applied, Every reward unlocked). Leave a setting blank to use our default wording. You can use these placeholders:
  - `[items_needed]`: how many more items the shopper needs.
  - `[amount_needed]`: how much more the shopper needs to spend, in their currency.
  - `[next_reward]`: the next reward, for example "20% off".
  - `[current_reward]`: the reward the cart already gets.

The message uses your theme's font and text color, so it matches your store without any setup.

### Reward names

By default, rewards are described by their value, for example "20% off" or "$5.00 off". To use your own names, give the tier a title in the discount editor. For example, a tier titled "Free tote bag" shows as "Add $23.00 more for Free tote bag".

## Languages

The default wording is in English. For other languages, type your wording into the block's text settings, then translate those settings with Shopify's Translate & Adapt app.

## Compatibility

- This block works on the cart page only. It doesn't show in cart drawers or pop-up carts.
- It requires an Online Store 2.0 theme. It will not work with legacy 1.0 themes.
